In Memory of Del "Didi" Barnett

We are proud to honor the remarkable life and legacy of Del “Didi” Barnett, whose profound impact on children and communities will be celebrated at this year’s Goldthwaite Music Festival. Born and raised in Goldthwaite, Del’s life was a testament to dedication and service.

After graduating from Goldthwaite High School and earning degrees from Baylor University and Our Lady of the Lake College, Del began a career devoted to helping others. His work with children started at the South Texas Children’s Home and continued at the Marydale Achievement Center, where he discovered his calling to improve the lives of children in need.

In 1971, Del founded New Horizons Home for Children, which became his true life's work. Over 36 years as Director, he transformed the organization into a beacon of hope, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to heal from past traumas and build positive memories. Del’s leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on countless lives, creating a legacy of healing and growth that continues to inspire.

Beyond his work with children, Del's commitment to community service was unwavering. He was an active steward of the Texas Archeological Society, contributing to the development of Legacy Plaza and planning educational programs for the Texas Botanical Gardens & Native American Interpretive Center. His passion for history and archaeology enriched the lives of those around him and highlighted his belief in preserving the past for future generations.

Del’s dedication extended beyond his professional life. He cherished spending time with family and friends, sharing his love of fishing and the outdoors. His creation of the “Mountain Lion” disc golf course on his ranch for his grandchildren exemplifies his generosity and desire to bring joy to those he loved.

As we honor Del’s lifetime of service, we are reminded of his profound impact on the lives of so many.
